Late Republican Roman and Pontic Command

Here are some Late Republican Roman and Pontic command figures that I've just finished painting. These are all metal Warlord Games figures released for their Hail Caesar supplement Rome's Conquest of the East, that covers the Mithridatic Wars. The figures are Marius, Sulla, a young Caesar on foot and Mithridates Eupator VI, King of Pontus.

Rebels win Game One 6-2 victory banners

Last Sunday Gary, Rick and I met down at the Vikings Club in Conder for the monthly meeting of the Canberra Regional Wargame Group. We played two Command and Colors games, the scenario was Hippacritae 240 BC from the Truceless War. The Rebel mercenaries commanded by Spendius and Autaritas, fighting the Carthaginians commanded by Hamilcar and Navaras.

The Carthaginian elephants were easy targets (only two blocks instead of four for all other units) and Autaritas' Gallic warriors were very effective. The Rebels won both games. Game one was over fairly quickly, see photos above, with the Rebels winning easily 6-2 victory banners. We swapped sides for Game Two, see photos below, and this was a much closer affair. The Rebels eventually winning 6-4 victory banners. As a real bonus I picked up these five books for $22 from the bring, buy and sell table!

Libyan Javelimen

Here are some Libyan javelinmen for my early and later Carthaginian armies. The ones on movement trays, in the first photo above, are mainly Victrix which I painted years ago. The second lot I've just finished painting and are Gripping Beast and 1st Corps Miniatures figures. We've got a Truceless War, Command and Colors Ancients, Hippacritae 240 BC game lined up for Sunday so they will all see action then.

Carthaginian Elephant and Cavalry

Here's another Carthaginian elephant and some cavalry that I've finally finished painting. The ellie and mahout are by 1st Corps, while the javelin armed crew are by Gripping Beast. The cavalry are also by 1st Corps. Shields on the ellie and cavalry are a mix of LBM/Victrix transfers, Wargames Foundry and Veni Vidi Vici water slide transfers and hand painted.

River Po 203 BC - Command and Colors Ancients Game

Elephants and a Roman cavalry unit are destroyed

Last Tuesday afternoon Rick came over and we played another Second Punic War CCA game out in the shed. The scenario was the River Po 203 BC, also known as the Battle of Insubria, with the Carthaginians led by Mago, fighting four Roman legions led by the proconsul M. Cornelius Cethegus and the praetor P. Quintilius Varus. The Romans had the advantage in infantry but this is quite a balanced scenario to play in terms of numbers and command cards.

The Carthaginians moved first and advanced with their cavalry and elephants on their right flank. The Romans responded by playing a mounted charge card. Once the dust settled from this the Carthaginian elephants and a Roman cavalry unit were destroyed. The cavalry tried again, the Punic cavalry routed, a leader was killed and the Roman cavalry retreated to lick their wounds. The Carthaginians then targeted the Velites light infantry with shooting and combat as they were unable to retreat through the main Roman line. The Carthaginian heavy infantry attacked in the centre led by Mago. Some lucky dice rolling by these units saw the Carthaginians win 7-4 victory banners.

Just before Easter Peter, Hans, Martin and I did a ride in the Snowy Mountains on our e-mtbs. We started at the Smiggins Hole-Guthega link road, rode down to the Guthega Power Station, up to Schlink Pass, then down to Geehi River for lunch, then up the Geehi Reservoir Road finishing where it joined the road to Khancoban, near the Geehi River campground. Here's a few pics of our ride.
