Gasgan Infantry

Slingers

Guardsmen and archers

Gasgan warriors

Group shot with chariots

Above are some 15mm Gasgan or Kaskan infantry that I've just finished painting. The figures are all by Khurasan Miniatures. I now have enough figures, with the two chariots I painted earlier in the month, to try a Chariots Rampant game against my 15mm Hittites. Below are some photos of the Warlord 28mm Gasgan/Kaskan warriors I painted a few years ago.

Warlord actually have quite a few later Anatolian highlander packs with at least two packs of warriors, as well as packs of archers, slingers and javelinmen. For the chariots you could use their light Hittite chariots and swap or convert the crew. These figures are more fully clothed with fleeces, pelts and cloaks which seems more likely as the Pontic Mountains region where they lived is at a high altitude and snow can occur even in the summer months. The highest peak there is Kackar Dagi 3,397 m (12,917 ft) and would have been covered in snow in the winter!

Late Republican Roman and Pontic Command

Here are some Late Republican Roman and Pontic command figures that I've just finished painting. These are all metal Warlord Games figures released for their Hail Caesar supplement Rome's Conquest of the East, that covers the Mithridatic Wars. The figures are Marius, Sulla, a young Caesar on foot and Mithridates Eupator VI, King of Pontus.

More Early Mycenaean Spearmen

Here are some more early Mycenaean spearmen that I've just finished painting. They're a mix of Foundry, Redoubt and Warlord figures. There are some later Foundry spearmen mixed in with these units but they are all armed with long spears and figure of eight or tower shields. We have a Trojan War Midgard game lined up tomorrow afternoon so these figures may see action then.

Seleucid Armoured Elephants and a Command and Colors Medieval Crusades Game

Here's a Warlord Games armoured Seleucid elephant and crew that I've just finished painting. The shield transfers are by LBM, Foundry and VVV. It's quite a hefty beast, nearly a match size wise, for the massive 1st Corps ellie to its right. In the elephant parade group shot above there are two Old Glory elephants (far left and far right), an Aventine one (second one from the left), Warlord (centre), and 1st Corps (second from the right). Of course these are all more armoured Seleucid elephants than I'll probably ever use in a game but it's nice to have some options! My favourite elephant is the Aventine one with a purple crest and blanket.

Last Tuesday afternoon Robert came over and we played a Command and Colors Medieval Crusades board game out in the shed. The scenario was Dorylaeum 1 July 1097 Phase 1 - Defendable Base Camp. This is the first of four scenarios, based on different phases, of this battle. There are twenty scenarios in total for this expansion, hours of fun gaming! Hopefully we will get in a game with figures over the Xmas break. We diced for sides and Robert had the Crusaders and I had the Seljuks.

Robert cannily retreated with his cavalry who were a bit exposed with their initial deployment. He made good use of his infantry to support his cavalry in attacks and the medium crossbow infantry were particularly effective, shooting range of four hexes and hitting on colours and swords! I had quite a few inspired action tokens but squandered the opportunities they presented and failed to use most of them. Robert managed to kill two of my leaders and in the end won fairly easily 6-2 victory banners. We both enjoyed it so much that we have another game organised for next week, Dorylaeum Phase 2 - Attack on the Camp.

Scipio Africanus

Here's Scipio Africanus with an attendant releasing a dove. Another Warlord Games resin figure from their monthly Soldier of Fortune series. We have a Second Punic War ADLG game set in Spain next Tuesday afternoon, so both he and Hannibal may see action then!

Hannibal Barca

Here's Hannibal Barca with his shield bearer. These are very detailed 28mm resin figures by Warlord Games which were a lot of fun to paint. It's a pity they're not doing the Punic Wars in 28mm as well! I have quite a collection of Hannibal figures from 1st Corps, Xyston, A&A and Relic Miniatures but this is the most detailed and heroic to date.

Sumerian Archers

Here are two units of Sumerian Archers I've just finished painting. These are mainly Warlord/Cutting Edge figures from their Early Household Archers pack but two Eureka figures have snuck among them. I have another batch of twenty four of these based and primed to bring my archer contingent up to strength for my Sumerian armies.

Today in the mail I got my order of the Gangs of Rome Two rules and accessory set, see photo below. The rules are a beautifully illustrated, 192 page hardback book. Look forward to revisiting these rules, painting the plastic gangs and mobs and assembling the Sarissa villa. Tomorrow night we have our first game of Border Wars, the Flags of War Border Reiver skirmish game, lined up so it will be interesting to see how that goes.

Early Imperial Roman Scorpions Two

Here's an Early Imperial Roman scorpion or bolt shooter and crew that I've just finished painting. These are from the new plastic Victrix set Early Imperial Roman Bolt-Shooter. You get four bolt shooters and sixteen crew as well barrels, bolts and stakes. As you'd expect a great kit with lots of options with crew and ready to shoot and just fired bolt shooters. There is a comparison shot at the bottom with Warlord's plastic and metal Early Imperial Roman scorpions and crew.

Late Republican Roman Legionaries

Here's a unit of Late Republican Roman legionaries that I've finally finished painting. They're plastic Warlord  Games figures, the last of four or five boxes I've painted. They're armed with gladius and are lot easier to rank up than those with pila. The cracking resin Aquilifer figure (of the Tenth Legion) was a freebie with the lastest Hail Caesar supplement Caesar's Gallic Wars.

Spartan and Theban Hoplites

Spartan command stands

Victrix Spartan hoplites

Foundry Spartan hoplites

Warlord Spartan hoplites

Here are some Spartan hoplites, command stands, cavalry and Theban hoplites that I painted some time ago. I had photos of these on my old blog Satrap Miniatures but haven't been able to track them down, so I've taken new photos. I still have quite a few Victrix and Foundry figures to paint for both Spartan and Theban armies.

Norman Milites

Here are some Norman Milites from the archives. These are mainly Conquest Games Norman plastic cavalry with two Crusader Miniatures figure...
