Late Roman Infantry

Here are some Late Roman infantry from the archives that I painted about nine years ago. The figures on round bases above are mainly Crusader Miniatures with Later Roman/Arthurian LBM shield transfers. The infantry below are mainly Wargames Foundry based on 40mm square bases and are the Lanciarii Gallicani Honoriani, legiones comitatenses in the Magister Peditum's infantry roster, assigned to the Magister Equitum's Gallic command in the Notitia Dignitatum. The archers in skirmish formation below them are by Gripping Beast and Black Tree Designs.

More Early Mycenaean Spearmen

Here are some more early Mycenaean spearmen that I've just finished painting. They're a mix of Foundry, Redoubt and Warlord figures. There are some later Foundry spearmen mixed in with these units but they are all armed with long spears and figure of eight or tower shields. We have a Trojan War Midgard game lined up tomorrow afternoon so these figures may see action then.

Later Mycenaean Chariot

Here's another later Mycenaean chariot that I've just finished painting. The chariot and horses are from the Wargames Atlantic plastic set Bronze Age Chariots, while the driver and warrior are by Wargames Foundry. You get three crew with each of the Foundry chariots, so I have a few spares to use for the Wargames Atlantic chariots. Below there's a comparison shot of Redoubt, Wargames Atlantic and Foundry chariots.

New Kingdom Egyptian Spearmen

Here are some New Kingdom Egyptian spearmen of the 19th or 20th dynasties that I've finally finished painting. The figures are by Wargames Foundry, sculpted by the Perrys. The back drop photo was taken in the Valley of Kings at Luxor in Egypt on our trip there in 2009.

Bronze Age European Chariots

Here are two Bronze Age European chariots with crew and two chieftains on foot. Figures are by Wargames Foundry. I will use these figures as Celt, Iberian and Balkan tribes to fight Sherden or Shardana, Sea Peoples and Mycenaeans.

Ashurbanipal - King of the World, King of Assyria.

Here is a Neo-Assyrian King, on campaign in his chariot, that I've finally finished painting. He is supposed to be Ashurbanipal, the last great Neo-Assyrian king who ruled from 669 to c. 631 BC. Figures and chariots are by Wargames Foundry. A great book to get if you're interested is I am Ashurbanipal: king of the world, king of Assyria edited by Gareth Brereton a publication which accompanied the 2018 and 2019 exhibition at the British Museum.

The figures are a mix of Crusader, A&A, Gripping Beast and Foundry with shield transfers by LBM/Victrix, Veni,Vidi, Vici, Foundry and some are hand painted. They have a mix of armour too with iron and bronze corslets with linen pteruges, linothorax and bronze scale.

Nubians and Ambush in Kush Chariots Rampant Game

Above are some photos of some Nubians I've finished painting, except for most of the archers and the Nubian chieftain which I painted a while ago. They're a real mix of ranges from Wargames Foundry (the best), Casting Room Miniatures, Warlord Nubians and Kushites, Vendel Kushites, Essex Miniatures and Black Tree Designs (the worst). I used these figures today for a 24 point Nubian Chariots Rampant force against New Kingdom Egyptians, commanded by Craig. The scenario was a Nubian ambush of the Egyptians, and proved to be a lot of fun. See photos below. The Egyptians just managed to fight off the Nubian attack but it was very close.

Neo-Assyrian Sab Sharri

Here's two mixed spearmen and bowmen units of Neo-Assyrian Sab Sharri from the archives. They're also a mix of ranges with mostly Foundry command in the front rank, a Hinchliffe officer and spearmen and Eureka bowmen in the rear ranks.

One of my most useful reference books for this period and earlier is the WRG book by Nigel Stillman and Nigel Tallis, Armies of the Ancient Near East 3,000 BC to 539BC, which is unfortunately out of print. I read on the Society of Ancients forum recently that this will be back in print soon, perhaps with an updated bibliography like Duncan Head's classic Armies of the Macedonian and Punic Wars 359 BC to 146 BC. Good news for all the biblical fans out there!

Norman Milites
