Numidian Cavalry

I'd like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and happy (and safe) gaming, blogging and painting for 2021!

Above are some 15mm Numidian cavalry by Corvus Belli, that I've just finished painting. PSC have just rereleased some of these figures in resin (Ultracast) as part of their Pacto Mortem et Gloriam Carthaginian army.

Below are some photos of White Cockatoos and a Corella enjoying a pre-Xmas feast from our apple tree.

Sassanid Elephant and Horse Archers

Here are a 15mm Sassanid elephant and some horse archers that I've just finished painting. The ellie and crew are by Legio Heroica, quite large and chunky compared to the other three I painted earlier in the year, see the comparison shot below. The blanket is from the LBM 15mm Sassanid banner sheet. The horse archers are a mix of AB Figures and PSC.

Sassanid Infantry

Sassanid skirmishers - slingers and archers

Sassanid archers

Here are some 15mm Sassanid infantry that I've just finished painting. The figures are mainly AB Figures with some of the new Plastic Soldier Company (PSC) Ultracast figures (archers and slingers) which are a type of resin rather than hard plastic. The elephants I painted earlier in the year are Lurkio Miniatures and one AB Figures.

The PSC figures are ultracast versions of the metal Lurkio Miniatures figures. The detail is excellent but the resin is quite soft and there are a few mould lines, these are easily removed with a sharp scalpel. I had a few breakages in the mail, with the four Pacto sized armies of Goths, Huns, Later Romans and Sassanids I ordered, each box was crushed. Repairs with super glue work fine, but I intend to replace the spears with spears made from flexible plastic bristles as most of the cavalry have levelled kontos. At 32 foot or 16 cavalry for 10 pounds (Pacto sized armies are 35 pounds) they do offer great value for money.

First Game of Battle Ravens

Last night we played our first game of Battle Ravens, the recently released shieldwall boardgame by Dan Mersey. It was really good fun - attrition in the shieldwall. I was the Norse and attacked repeatedly to little effect. The Scots were a little more canny and saved their Battle Ravens until the Norse used all of theirs, then attacked to greater effect. Each player starts with 20 Ravens and these are used to move, attack or defend individual units. The aim of the game is to break your opponent's shieldwall by capturing three of the six areas on the board. Attacks are rolled with normal dice and a 4 or 5 is a hit and a 6 a double hit with Hirdmen worth two hits and the Bondi one. Thralls allow you to reroll a failed attack. Blocking the attacks works in the same way.

At the end of the turn once both players have used all their Ravens you start again, returning Thralls to the board and players alternate placing Ravens. If a player has an area captured, with all units removed, the opposing warriors move into it and play no further part in the game. The losing player then removes a Thrall and three Ravens from their hand for each area captured. It proved to be a slippery slope for the Norse in our game and it wasn't long before the victorious Scots had easily captured three Norse areas. I'm looking forward to my next game and will try the Tactic Cards, which reflect the historical tactics, each army has ten of these and five are chosen randomly to use in a game.
