Sea Peoples versus New Kingdom Egyptians Midgard Game

Last Wednesday afternoon Garry and Robert came over and we played a Sea Peoples versus New Kingdom Egyptians Midgard game out in the shed. Robert was recovering from running the MeG comp at Cancon, so he just watched the game. Garry commanded the Egyptian attackers and I commanded the Sea Peoples defenders. The Egyptian chariots proved very effective with their shooting and soon routed the javelin armed Sea Peoples' chariots. The armies closed but infantry combat didn't see an improvement in the Sea Peoples' fortune. Their army commander was killed in single combat by the Egyptian commander and after several rounds of combat an Egyptian archer unit routed a Sherden warrior unit to claim the Sea Peoples' final reputation token and win the game.

Sea Peoples versus New Kingdom Egyptians ADLG Game

Last Thursday afternoon Garry came over to my place and we played a Sea Peoples versus New Kingdom Egyptian ADLG game out in the shed. We diced for sides and I commanded the Egyptians and Garry commanded the Sea Peoples with Libyan allies. This was similar to a game we played last year but this time I was the Egyptians, facing the impetuous Sea Peoples and Libyan warriors! It was a pretty quick game and I forgot to take photos for much of it. In the end the Egyptian chariots did well but their infantry were no match for the Sea Peoples and Libyans and they lost 22-12.

Hittite Spearmen and Sea Peoples

Here are some 15mm Hittite spearmen and Sea Peoples that I've just finished painting. Most of them are Red Copper Miniatures figures except for two Essex figures on a Sherden base (far right, second photo down). The resin figures were printed by Proxy Wargaming, a 3D printing service in Sydney, who provide a great service and really detailed figures with minimal clean up required. Their prices have gone up since I bought these and I actually bought most of my Early Hebrew army from Baueda in Italy who have very reasonable overseas postage (12 Euros).

Below are some comparison shots of the Red Copper Pelset figures with Essex Pelset figures, Red Copper Hittite spearmen with those from Gladiator, Essex and Chariot Miniatures. They're obviously very detailed, as they're available as 28mm figures as well. The Hittite spearmen have no sidearm, like a dagger, axe or sword and one of the figures has a cropped beard (the Hittites were clean shaven). Many of the Sea Peoples figures have bronze forearm guards not something I've seen in any illustrations, reliefs or other 28mm ranges before but were used in early Mycenaean Dendra type armour. I'm working on some Syrian Chariots and a New Kingdom Egyptian camp so will post photos of these when finished.

New Kingdom Egyptians versus Libyans and Sea Peoples ADLG Game

Forces approach, shooting commences

Last Monday Craig came over to my place and we played a 200 point ADLG game out in the shed with New Kingdom Egyptians versus Libyans and Sea Peoples. Craig commanded the Egyptians and I was the attacker with Libyans and Sea Peoples. We experimented with using an average dice instead of the usual D6 to reduce the randomness factor. Rereading the rules you're only supposed to do this for combat but it seemed to work well in general. I rolled a D6 for my Sea Peoples allies and luckily they were not hesitant as they were the best infantry in my army! On a roll of 1 in the first turn they remain hesitant and can not move or shoot until a 6 is rolled in a subsequent turn.

The Sea Peoples' chariots charged the Nubian skirmishers, who evaded several times before being caught and destroyed. The Egyptian chariots on both flanks charged, on their right into Sherden warriors, and on their left into Libyan chariots with supporting skirmishers. In the centre the impetuous Libyan warriors charged the Egyptian infantry who threatened to break through and were able to kill the attached Libyan commander. The Libyans managed to hold in the centre and a second line of impetuous warriors charged in to occupy the remaining Egyptian infantry. Meanwhile on the flanks the casualties were mounting for the Egyptian chariots. A desperate last ditch charge by the Egyptian javelinmen on their right flank failed to turn things around and the Egyptians broke, ending a very one sided game.

Sea Peoples Chariots and Warriors

Here are some Sea Peoples from the archives. The Pelset and Lukka chariots above are by Cutting Edge/Warlord Games and the Lukka warriors below are by Wargames Foundry. These are the two best ranges around, for Bronze Age armies.

Sea Peoples

Shaasu or Shosu Bedoiun skirmishers

Teresh Warriors and Sheklesh Warriors

Here are some Sea Peoples from the archives - quite a mix of tribes and figure ranges (although the identity and appearance of some tribes is not really known for certain). The Shosu skirmishers are a mix of Wargames Foundry and Cutting Edge/Warlord Games. The Teresh and Sheklesh warriors are a mix of Wargames Foundry and Northstar Miniatures. The Lukka and Pelset Warriors are all Wargames Foundry and the Pelset crew with ox cart and donkeys are a mix of Newline Designs and Castaway Arts.
