Norman Milites

Here are some Norman Milites from the archives. These are mainly Conquest Games Norman plastic cavalry with two Crusader Miniatures figures. Shield transfers and banner are by Battle Flag with LBMs on the Crusader figures. I based these with a desert look, burnt grass and dried tuffs so I could use them as Normans in Sicily and for the Early Crusades.

More Numidian Elephants

Here are two more Numidian elephants and crew that I've just finished painting. The figures are by Crusader Miniatures. Below are a few comparison shots with the Victrix Numidian elephants. I still have more infantry and Victrix Numidian cavalry with zebra and giraffe hide shield transfers to paint but a game with them isn't too far off.

Samnite Linen Legion

Here are some Samnites from the archives, the Linen Legion described by Livy in his The History of Rome (Book 10.38.12.), who fought at the Battle of Aquilonia during the Third Samnite War:

...when the leading Samnites had been bound by this imprecation, the general named ten of them and bade them choose every man another, and so to proceed until they had brought up their number to sixteen thousand. These were named the "Linen Legion," from the roof of the enclosure wherein the nobles had been sworn, and were given splendid arms and crested helmets, to distinguish them from the rest.

These are all Crusader Miniatures figures that I painted about nine years ago. I have a Pen and Sword book on the Third Samnite War by Mike Roberts but haven't read it yet!

Last Sunday we went on a camping trip to Barrington Tops and Ganguddy-Dunns Swamp, near Rylestone in the Wollemi National Park. Below are a few pics from our trip.

Late Roman Infantry

Here are some Late Roman infantry from the archives that I painted about nine years ago. The figures on round bases above are mainly Crusader Miniatures with Later Roman/Arthurian LBM shield transfers. The infantry below are mainly Wargames Foundry based on 40mm square bases and are the Lanciarii Gallicani Honoriani, legiones comitatenses in the Magister Peditum's infantry roster, assigned to the Magister Equitum's Gallic command in the Notitia Dignitatum. The archers in skirmish formation below them are by Gripping Beast and Black Tree Designs.

Dark Age Irish and Norse Gael Warriors

Here are some Dark Age or Early Medieval Irish and Norse Gael/Hiberno Norse warriors. Figures are by Gripping Beast and Crusader Miniatures with LBM transfers. I have more Irish I'm working on at the moment, Footsore Miniatures, Gripping Beast plastics and Wargames Atlantic plastics. I'll post photos of these, including some comparison shots, once I've finished painting them. The back drop photo was taken in the Orkney Islands in 2011.

Dark Ages Irish Cavalry and Slingers

Here are some Dark Ages or Early Medieval Irish cavalry and slingers. I painted the cavalry some time ago but have just finished the slingers. Figures are by Crusader Miniatures and Gripping Beast with some LBM shield transfers. I'm working on some Irish infantry at the moment, I have a reasonable size painted Viking army but need to finish painting their opponents. Byzantines, Irish, Anglo-Saxons, Welsh, Scots/Picts and Rus are all waiting to be finished!

I want to put in a plug for Frank Sultana's Blood on the Sands Kickstarter, which has just started and is almost full funded. These are excellent Gladiator rules for one on one combat. For $145 AUD you get the core box set which includes rules, dice, tokens and plastic gladiators. Well worth supporting if you're interested in gladiator rules, they've been extensively play tested and Frank has been researching and working on them for over ten years. Highly recommended!
