Hitties versus New Kingdom Egyptians DBA Game

Hitties deployed

New Kingdom Egyptians deployed

Both sides advance

Last Wednesday night down at the Vikings Club in Lanyon, Rick and I met and played a DBA game of Hittites versus New Kingdom Egyptians. Rick had the Hittites and was the attacker, while I had the New Kingdom Egyptians and was the defender. This turned out to be pretty slow going as we bumbled our way through the game, it was Rick's first game of DBA 3.0 and my second, although we both had played DBA 2.2 years ago. Much of our game seem to involve indecisive combat and recoils with nothing much happening until two ranks of Hittite 3 Pk (they used to be Sp under 2.2) destroyed a Libyan warband. In the end we ran out of time. We were missing some basic DBA tactics, in 2.2 I seem to remember flank support was crucial, but this has changed. So further reading of the rules, and the QRS is obviously required.

Here are some 15mm New Kingdom Egyptians that I've just finished painting. I posted some photos last year of a half a DBA army, so these chariots, spearmen and camp complete that, with thirteen bases in total. I'll expand this army for the Mortem et Gloriam rules but already have quite a large 28mm New Kingdom Egyptian army, so that is an option as well. The figures are a real mix of ranges and the back drop photo was taken in the Saqqara area in Egypt in 2009.

Early Seleucids versus Galatians DBA Game

Galatian attackers deployed

Seleucid defenders advance

Galatian warbands

I haven't played a DBA game for years but did pick up Version 3 when it came out about five years ago. Earlier today I played a solo game with my Early Seleucids versus the Galatians. Surprisingly, the Galatians won easily, destroying four Seleucid elements, without losing any casualties themselves. Lucky dice rolling and the fact that the Seleucid pike didn't get in combat at all, assisted the cause. It was fun to get my 15mm out and roll some dice, despite the long break in playing the rules.

Galatians

Galatian chariots (3 x LCh)

Galatian cavalry (2 x Cav)

Here are some 15mm Celts that I will use as a Galatian DBA army to fight my Early Seleucids. The figures are a mix of Xyston, Essex, Minifigs and Corvus Belli. Some of the shields have LBM and VVV transfers and the rest are hand painted. The stone huts and enclosure are by Blue Moon. Some of the photos I took didn't past muster, there are three warband elements missing, but you can see them in the back rank of the cropped group photo at the bottom.

The back drop photo was taken at Hattusa (modern Bogazkoy), the old Hittite capital, on our visit there in 2011. The Galatians settled in Central Anatolia in the first half of the third century BC, actually at this site. According to Jurgen Seeher in his guidebook, Hattusha Guide: A Day in the Hittite Capital (p.175.):

The site of Tavium near the village Buyuk Nefeskoy some 20km south of Bogazkoy became the seat of the Trokmer clan, who took the land around Hattusha/Bogazkoy under their control. Buyukkale once again became a fortified citadel, and a small village occupied part of what had been the Lower City. The painted pottery characteristic of the Galatians was recovered here, as well as vessels imported from the Hellenistic cities along the west coast.

Libyans

Here are some 15mm New Kingdom Egyptians, there are six elements to date, half of a DBA army to fight my 15mm Hittites. The figures are a mix of Essex Miniatures, Chariot Miniatures, Black Hat Miniatures and the mud brick building is by Hovels. The chariot and horses are old strip Minifigs and the standard bearer and driver are by Chariot Miniatures.

Hittites

Here are some 15mm Hittites that I'll use for a DBA army amongst other things. The figures are by Essex Miniatures, Magister Militum and Black Hat Miniatures. The back drop photo is of the reconstructed walls at Hattusa, the ancient Hittite capital, (modern Bogazkale, formerly Bogazkoy). I'll post some photos of Hattusa and other Hittite sites soon. I also have a 28mm Hittite army and will post photos of that as well.
