Balearic Slingers

Here are some Companion Miniatures Balearic slingers that I've just finished painting. I have a few other ranges of these in 28mm, the Warlord ones with cloaks based on Trajan's Column, and Crusader and Gripping Beast figures as well, but these are my favourite.

According to Diodorus Siculus (Book V Chapter 18):

Their equipment for fighting consists of three slings, and of these they keep one around the head, another around the belly, and the third in their hands. In the business of war they hurl much larger stones than do any other slingers, and with such force that the missile seems to have been shot as it were, from a catapult; consequently, in their assaults upon walled cities, they strike the defenders on the battlements and disable them, and in pitched battles they crush both shields and helmets and every kind of protective armour. And they are so accurate in their aim that in the majority of cases they never miss the target before them. The reason for this is the continual practice from childhood, in their mothers compel them, while still young boys, to use the the sling continually; for there is set up before them as a target a piece of bread fastened to a stake, and the novice is not permitted to eat until he has hit the bread whereupon he takes it from his mother with her permission and devours it.

Below are some old Minifigs 15mm Balearic slingers that I painted probably about forty years ago!

Galatian Commanders and Javelinmen

Here are some Galatian commanders and javelinmen. I made four 60mm square sabot bases for my Galatian commanders, the figures are by Victrix, Foundry and Companion with LBM shield transfers. I've just finished painting the javelinmen, these are Wargames Factory, Warlord, Renegade, Vendel and 1st Corps figures with mainly LBM and VVV transfers, and some hand painted shields. The back drop photo is of Hatussa (modern Bogazkoy), the ancient Hittite capital in Central Anatolia, the Galatians actually settled here, it was the seat of the Trokmer clan.

A couple of weeks ago we did this really nice day walk in Tidbinbilla, the loop of Mt Tidbinbilla, Tidbinbilla Peak and John's Peak. Below are quite a few photos of our walk!

The track up is steep in places

Gallic Cavalry

Above are some Gallic cavalry that I've just finished painting. These are all Victrix Miniatures with Victrix shield transfers. These have been stuck on my painting desk for a long time so it is good to finish them off. The five photos below are more Gallic cavalry from the archives, these are Wargames Foundry, Companion Miniatures and A&A Miniatures with LBM shield transfers.

These next two units in the three photos below were painted by the late Col Jones and are a mix of Gripping Beast and Warlord Games.

This last unit in the two photos below are Warlord Games figures that I painted. I'm hoping to play a refight of the Battle of Sabis 57 BC with the Mortem et Gloriam rules soon, so some of these figures at least, should see action in that game.
