Sassanid Commanders

Here are two Sassanid Command stands for my 15mm Sassanid army, that I've just finished painting (I have a 28mm Sassanid army as well). The figures are by Legio Heroica and AB Figures with LBM banners. Apparently they're hard to use well in MeG, to make best use of their combined shooting and combat abilities, so no doubt it will be a steep learning curve with a few disasters on the way! Mainly cavalry armies have never faired that well in most rules I've played to date but you've still got to go with an army that appeals.

Sassanid Elephant and Horse Archers

Here are a 15mm Sassanid elephant and some horse archers that I've just finished painting. The ellie and crew are by Legio Heroica, quite large and chunky compared to the other three I painted earlier in the year, see the comparison shot below. The blanket is from the LBM 15mm Sassanid banner sheet. The horse archers are a mix of AB Figures and PSC.

Sassanid Infantry

Sassanid skirmishers - slingers and archers

Sassanid archers

Here are some 15mm Sassanid infantry that I've just finished painting. The figures are mainly AB Figures with some of the new Plastic Soldier Company (PSC) Ultracast figures (archers and slingers) which are a type of resin rather than hard plastic. The elephants I painted earlier in the year are Lurkio Miniatures and one AB Figures.

The PSC figures are ultracast versions of the metal Lurkio Miniatures figures. The detail is excellent but the resin is quite soft and there are a few mould lines, these are easily removed with a sharp scalpel. I had a few breakages in the mail, with the four Pacto sized armies of Goths, Huns, Later Romans and Sassanids I ordered, each box was crushed. Repairs with super glue work fine, but I intend to replace the spears with spears made from flexible plastic bristles as most of the cavalry have levelled kontos. At 32 foot or 16 cavalry for 10 pounds (Pacto sized armies are 35 pounds) they do offer great value for money.

Sassanid Elephants

Here are three Sassanid elephants and crew that I've just finished painting. Two of these are Lurkio Miniatures and the one in the middle is AB Figures. I'm on a bit of a 15mm kick at the moment and and have more of the AB Figures Sassanids based and undercoated, ready to paint. One of the ellie blankets actually has a 28mm LBM Sassanid shield transfer with a boss hole in the middle. I was too lazy to touch it up and thought I might ruin it in the attempt! I also have quite a large 28mm Sassanid army which I have started painting. The back drop photo was taken in Turkey, near Goreme in Cappadocia in 2011.
